Exercise and movement increase the production of endorphins, the “happy” neurochemicals in our systems that boost mood and wellness. The state of our bodies impacts our mood, and our mood can impact our bodies – when we’re sad, our posture slumps; when we’re happy and have a sense of confidence, we sit upright, expanding our chests. Movement is crucial to keeping our mindsets strong, positive, and healthy – think of it as meditation in motion to get yourself moving and combating the negative impact of being stuck at home.
In what ways can you create movement today, even while indoors? Here are some ideas:
🌸
🌸 Music: Listen to pop, jazz, classics, whatever you enjoy, and just move around however feels authentic to you. Notice how your body responds. What does that feel like? What sensations are you noticing?
🌸 Stretch: Stand, lean, focus on one limb at a time, your fingers extending, then your arms, and so on. Take it slow, enjoy the moment, and notice how revitalizing it feels.
🌸 Posture: How are you sitting right now? Try straightening your back, lifting your spine, rolling your shoulders back, and holding your chest out. Do you notice a difference?
🌸 Imagery: Yes, you can imagine dancing and not move a muscle – this actually boosts endorphins, too! Research has shown that imagery just by itself can help create a sense of wellness.
🌸 Dance Videos: I love to watch Gene Kelly videos and imagine being able to pull off some of those moves – this is where Youtube can be your best friend. Find videos with choreographed dancing and enjoy – maybe even learn a move or two!
